St Mary Axe is a modern street located in the City of London. It gets its name from a famous ancient church dedicated to the Virgin Mary that was situated in the area but was demolished in the 16th century, as well as a popular tavern that had the image of an axe on its facade. An iconic London building – Lloyd’s of London – is situated in the vicinity, as is the second tallest building in the city – The Heron Tower.
