The historic town of Sandwich in Kent is positioned on the River Stour within the district of Dover. One of England’s historic Cinque Ports, the town is filled with reminders of its fascinating past, with listed and medieval buildings scattered throughout. Sandwich was once a thriving port but these days is better known for being an area that is steeped in history and culture. The attractive Sandwich Bay area is a major pull when it comes to visitors, and here you will find everything from excellent golf facilities to fascinating nature reserves. There are many landmarks and places of interest to explore in Sandwich, including the Guildhall, the 15th century Admiral Owen pub, and the White Mill. Of course, another famous connection that the town has is with the food item of the same name. It is claimed that the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, asked for some meat in between two slices of bread and this led to others asking the same thing as Sandwich.
A number of small and large businesses operate in and around Sandwich, with one major employer in the area being Pfizer UK, the pharmaceutical giant. While Pfizer has now moved some operations out of the area, this has given way to the creation of a huge enterprise park, which could help to boost the local economy. Other companies that have office space here include The Change Corporation Ltd, The Sandwich Printing Co, and AEI Compounds Ltd.
Entertainment And Dining Out
A number of festivities take place here each year for those who are looking for cultural and vibrant entertainment, such as the Sandwich Festival. You will also find a number of quaint, historic pubs where you can soak up history and enjoy a relaxing drink. While Sandwich may be famous for the birth of the humble sandwich, you will find far more than this on the menus of its restaurants. The Brasserie on the Bay is a great place to enjoy British food in a pleasant setting while My Thai offers the chance to sample delicious Thai cuisine. For great pies and an excellent gastropub experience, head to the George & Dragon.
Sandwich is served by a network of buses and taxis, which provide alternative means of ground transport for those not planning to drive in the area. Adequate road links provide access around the town for drivers, also providing a convenient link to Canterbury. Rail serves can be accessed via Sandwich Railway Station on the Kent Coast Line. A few miles away, you will find Manston Airport, which provides a number of flights while Gatwick Airport is the closest major air travel hub.
