The area at the intersection of Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross road in central London is known as Cambridge Circus. Once a roundabout, the area does not have its famous traffic island any longer, but continues to be a major junction. Its proximity to Leicester Square, as well as the presence of the Palace Theatre on the west side of the intersection, is largely responsible for a huge number of visitors to the area. Cambridge Circus has also become famous as the neighbourhood that houses the offices of M16, as fictionalised in writer John Le Carre’s works. Portions of many popular films including The League of Gentlemen, Match Point, and recently Slumdog Millionaire, have been shot at this location.
