Area Guide Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton is a city in the West Midlands region of England that joins with Birmingham to form the second largest continuous urban area in the UK, with Greater London being the first. The city lies just north-west of Birmingham and has been a very significant economic and commercial centre since the Industrial Revolution and the late 18th century. Key to the city's progress in the 19th century was its success as a mining area, with major businesses growing up around Wolverhampton's booming coal, limestone and iron ore industries. In the 21st century, the citys economy relies in part on the success of its aerospace and service sector industries. Wolverhampton today is very much a modern city with a thriving cultural and commercial life. There are several dozen districts that form part of the larger city, with a ring road encircling the main central area and key local landmarks like the Wolverhampton Civic Hall, St Peter's Church and parts of the University of Wolverhampton.

Setting up your business here

Wolverhampton has a very healthy supply of high-quality serviced office space and excellent connections to nearby Birmingham, as well as other major English cities like Manchester, Bristol, Liverpool and London. Companies headquartered in Wolverhampton include the financial services group Birmingham Midshires, the multinational facilities management giant Carillion and the aerospace and automotive operator GTS Technologies. Other notable employers in and around the city include the Tarmac Group, the environmental consultancy company ADAS and the food retail and distribution business AF Blakemore.

Culture and Entertainment

Great places to visit in Wolverhampton include the Civic Hall, the Grand Theatre and the Mader Shopping Centre, all of which you can find in close proximity within the heart of the city. For fascinating and historic destinations slightly away from the city centre, try the Wightwick Manor and Gardens, Moseley Old Hall or the Bantock House Museum and Park. Meanwhile, back in the city centre, two destinations always worth a visit are the Wolverhampton Art Gallery and St Peter's Collegiate Church.

Eating out

For excellent places to eat out, you could try Banks Bistro on Bath Road, Made In Thai on Darlington Street or the Bilash on Cheapside for some quality Indian cuisine. Or if you're looking for lively locations to grab a drink or two, try any of the Gifford Arms, the Cuban Exchange or a whole range of stylish locations within the WV One entertainment and retail complex.
