About Poplar

Poplar is an area of East London that lies within the Borough of Tower Hamlets, a little way north of Canary Wharf – one of the two primary financial centres in London. Jurisdiction and local government rearrangements saw the Metropolitan Borough of Poplar come into and out of official existence during the 19th and 20th centuries. The district though has remained very close to the heart of London and many of its most economically and commercial active areas, including an array of London docks and the famous Billingsgate Fish Market. Key areas in the district include the Poplar Business Park and Poplar High Street, which runs directly through the heart of the area. Prominent local landmarks include the All Saints’ Church, which was built between 1821 and 1823 and is now a Grade II listed building.

Although generally a residential area throughout its history, Poplar has emerged as a viable home for a variety of businesses, not least those connected to financial service industries. The area is extraordinarily well served by local transport via road but crucially by the Docklands Light Railway, which runs through Poplar from Bank to Dagenham Dock. The Jubilee Tube line can be joined from nearby Canary Wharf and the A13, an arterial road route in and out of East London cuts right through the district. There are some great pubs in Poplar, such as the Greenwich Pensioner and the Oporto, and there are pleasant open spaces such as the Poplar Recreation Ground. Nearby attractions include the O2 Arena, formerly known as the Millennium Dome, where internationally renowned superstars draw huge crowds throughout the year. Meanwhile, within Canary Wharf, there is a huge variety of excellent restaurants like Plateau, Royal China and Iberica CW, all of which offering amazing food in luxury modern environments. Among the best bars in the area are the Cat and Canary, the Henry Addlington and the Boisdale of Canary Wharf. Plus the many varied delights of central London, the West End and places like Greenwich, Shoreditch and Dalston are all close by and easily reached from anywhere in Poplar.
