Area Guide City of London

Technically a city in its own right, this central London area is home to many financial institutions including the Bank of England. The area has long been associated with trading and financial service industries, as well as international businesses of all kinds. Insurance companies, for example, are scattered around the eastern side while the likes of Coutts and Ion Trading fill the Gherkin.

Modern, glass-plated buildings are mixed with those belonging to age-old institutions such as Mansion House, where the Lord Mayor resides. During the week, the City of London is one of the busiest places in the country, yet by Saturday the streets are almost deserted, giving it a slightly surreal quality.

Setting up your business here

This booming part of the city is well set up for businesses, from its many high-end restaurants and coffee shops to its multiple transport links. Granted, it may be too well set up, attracting vast numbers of people who fill the pavements and tubes every weekday. In turn, lunch and travel prices will generally be higher than other areas, though cheaper options can be found with a little research.

Office space is plentiful, with offices to rent for every size and shape of business. You'll be in good company with many of the world's most successful businesses having an office or headquarters in the area.

Culture and Entertainment

Lovers of architecture can marvel at buildings such as St Paul's Cathedral and other Wren-designed churches, including St Michael on Cornhill. If you have some spare time, make sure to pass by Leadenhall Market too - this glass and iron structure is a stunning example of Victorian workmanship.

The Tower of London is worthy of at least an afternoon. Located next to Tower Hill Station, the castle has a wealth of attractions including the Tower Ravens, Beefeater tours, and the world famous Crown Jewels. Residents of Tower Hamlets can access the Tower of London for just £1.

For some more contemporary culture, head towards the Barbican Centre. Regular art exhibitions are complemented with global cinema, theatre productions and classical music.

Eating out

Countless options await those seeking a business lunch venue with the foresight to book a table in advance. Hawksmoor Guildhall is an upscale steakhouse located less than five minutes' walk from Bank. Carnivores can delight in meals ranging from fillet steak to a seven-course tasting menu.

An even fancier option is Duck and Waffle, which occupies the 40th floor of a skyscraper by Liverpool Street. Expect views of the Gherkin, a decadent menu and a price tag to match.

Want to stay casual? Leadenhall Market is a picturesque covered market dotted with cafes and food stalls. Alternatively, head to Cheapside around Bank for places such as Pho, which serves healthy Vietnamese fayre.
