Area Guide City of London

Technically a city in its own right, this central London area is home to many financial institutions including the Bank of England. The area has long been associated with trading and financial service industries, as well as international businesses of all kinds. Insurance companies, for example, collect around the eastern side while the likes of Coutts and Ion Trading fill the Gherkin.

Modern, glass-plated buildings are mixed with those belonging to age-old institutions such as Mansion House, which is the residence of the Lord Mayor. During the week, the City of London is one of the busiest places in the country yet by Saturday the streets are almost deserted giving it a slightly surreal quality.

Setting up your business here

This booming part of the city is well set up for businesses, from its many high-end restaurants and coffee shops to its multiple travel links. Granted, it may be too well set up, attracting vast numbers of people who fill the pavements and tubes each weekday. In turn, lunch and travel prices will generally be higher than most other places, though with some extra research cheaper options can be sought out.

Culture and Entertainment

Lovers of architecture can marvel in buildings such as St Paulís Cathedral and other Wren churches, including St Michael on Cornhill. If you have some spare time, make sure to pass by Leadenhall Market too. This glass and iron structure is a stunning example of Victorian workmanship.

Tower of London is worthy of at least an afternoon. Located next to Tower Hill Station, the castle has a wealth of attractions including the Tower Ravens, Beefeater tours, and, of course; the Crown Jewels. Residents of Tower Hamlets can access the ToL for just £1. For some more contemporary culture, head towards Barbican Centre. Regular art exhibitions are complemented with global cinema, theatre productions and classical music.

Eating out

Countless options await those seeking a business lunch venue Ė the main challenge will be deciding where and making sure to book a table. Hawksmoor Guildhall is an upscale steakhouse based less than five minutesí walk from Bank. Carnivores delight in meals ranging from fillet steak to a seven-course tasting menu.

An even fancier option is Duck and Waffle which lords it up on the 40th floor of a skyscraper by Liverpool Street. Expect views of the Gherkin, a decadent menu and a price tag to match.

Want to stay casual? Leadenhall Market is a picturesque covered market dotted with cafes and food stalls. Or you could head to Cheapside around Bank for a place like Pho which serves healthy Vietnamese fayre.
