Nizhniy Novgorod is locally referred to as Nizhny. This city in Russia is the economic and cultural centre of the Volga-Vyatka economic region, and also the centre of administrative for Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, and Volga Federal District. It is the 5th largest city in Russia. Nizhny is split by the Oka River into two distinct parts. The Upper City is situated on the eastern, hilly bank of the river.

Nizhny Novgorod offers an art gallery, along with museums of human history and culture. The art gallery houses over 12,000 exhibits, including an enormous collection of classical works by Russian artists, many avant-garde works by Russian artists, a large selection of Western European art, and a collection of East Asian art. Another interesting sight in the city is the Chkalov Staircase. This unique architectural monument was originally called the Volga Staircase. Dining options in the city include Gorod Gorky. This unique little restaurant is hidden in a courtyard, and steeped in retro-Soviet Union. Here you can see a wax representation of Leonid Brezhnev’s office, before passing into the dining room. You will find the space filled with Soviet memorabilia and pictures of the Beatles. Restoratsia Pyatkin – offers many Volga specialties including prafish and pike perch baked with cheese, and brewed apple kvas. Biblioteca – is a café situated above the Dirizhabl bookshop. The food is Italian, offering pasta and pizza. The décor is an eclectic mix of kerosene lamps and bookshelves.
Nizhniy Novgorod Strigino Airport offers direct flights to major Russian cities, as well as to Frankfurt, Dubai, and Prague. Public transport within the city is provided by a small subway system, tramways, marshrutkas or minibuses, buses, and trolleybuses. There are electric and diesel commuter trains that go to several of Nizhny’s suburbs.
