A city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany—Wuppertal is located in the Wupper River valley. The city is situated east of Düsseldorf and south of the Ruhr area. Wuppertal is prized for its woodlands and parks, its steep slopes, and the suspension railway known as the Wuppertal Schwebebahn. There are so many parks and woodland paths in the city that a ten minute walk in any direction will take you to a green space. Bayer invented aspirin in Wuppertal in 1897; it still has major operations in the area, which were established more than 130 years ago. Another major airport in the area is Dortmund Airport, also offering international and domestic flights. The Cologne/Bonn Airport provides additional air-travel options from Cologne, which is within 64 km (40 miles) of Wuppertal. Wuppertal is only 30 minutes away from Cologne by regional train, with departures running several times an hour. Built in 1902, The Wuppertaler Schwebebahn is the world’s oldest monorail system. The suspended trains run across the city. Most of the 13 km (8 miles) of track is over the Wupper River.
