Also spelled Coblenz or Coblence, this German city is the third largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate. Koblenz is situated on both banks of the Rhine where it meets the river Moselle. Koblenz is 92 kilometres (57 miles) southeast of Cologne by rail.
While being a principal seat of the Mosel and Rhenish wine trade, Koblenz also does a large business in the export of mineral waters. The economy is also dependant on the manufacturing of automotive parts with companies such as TRW Automotive and Stabilus in the region. Other companies and institutions in the area include Aleris Aluminium – aluminium coils), Königsbacher brewery, the headquarters of the German Army Forces Command. For an entertaining afternoon, visit a beer garden or a ‘Weinstube’ (wine tavern) serving local ale or wine. Look for a ‘Straußwirtschaft’ (a winery or winegrower’s cottage) where homemade wine is offered. The signs like a broom, a bottle, or a bunch of birch twigs all tied up with coloured ribbons are somewhat cryptic but worth looking out for. The cottage’s often have homemade food to go with the wine and friendly welcome from the owners who treat you almost as though you were part of the family. Koblenz is a great place to go for a walk. Koblenz Hbf is an Intercity-Express stop on the West Rhine Railway between Bonn and Mainz and is also served by trains on the East Rhine Railway to Wiesbaden–Cologne.
