Kiel is the capital and most populous city in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein. It is located 90 kilometres (56 mi) north of Hamburg. Kiel is one of the major maritime centres in Germany. The city is known for a variety of international sailing events, including the annual Kiel Week, which is the biggest sailing event in the world. This area has a number of lakes and parks in the city centre, including Schrevenpark (Schreven Park). The beaches located north of Kiel, such as Strande, Kiel-Schilksee, Möltenort, and Laboe are also popular places to visit in spring and summer.
Kiel’s economy closely follows the service sector, transport, and maritime industries. Kiel is one of the major ports of the German Navy, and a leading centre of German high-tech military and civil shipbuilding. Kiel is the headquarters for Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft, a shipyard famous for its construction of submarines. It is a subsidiary of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the leading German group of shipyards. Kiel offers many options for office space throughout the area.

Kiel is Schleswig-Holstein’s largest city, and the towns shopping district is a major attraction. The Holstenstraße (Holsten Street) is one of the longest shopping miles in Germany. Other points of interest in the town include The Rathaus (town hall), which was built in 1911. This building has an operating paternoster (a passenger elevator with a chain of open compartments). The square in front of the town hall is bordered by a lake and the Opera House. Restaurants in the area include Vapiano, offering Italian cuisine for lunch, dinner, and late night dining. There is also Wang-Su, a Chinese restaurant that offers a buffet. Tan Tamar is a popular Thai food restaurant in the area with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and excellent Thai cuisine.
The nearest international airport to Kiel is Hamburg Airport. This is situated approximately 90 kilometres (56 mi) to the south of Kiel. There is a shuttle bus service (KIELIUS) operating between Hamburg Airport and Kiel central station. The city has a central station with hourly trains to Hamburg, Lübeck, Flensburg and to Husum. Moreover, the Intercity Express (ICE) connects Kiel with Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne and Munich. Kiel is situated near the A 7, which connects northern Europe with central and southern Europe. This city is an important port for passenger and cargo shipping from Germany to Scandinavia, the Baltic States, and Russia. Passenger ferries operate from and to Gothenburg in Sweden, Oslo in Norway, and Klaip?da in Lithuania.
