Stockholm is the busy capital of Sweden and the country’s largest city. As the seat of the country’s government, Stockholm is the home of the Swedish Parliament (riksdagen), the monarch of Sweden, the prime minister of Sweden and the Sweden’s Supreme Court (Hogsta domstolen). Twenty-two percent of the country’s population lives in this urban Swedish city. Stockholm is a city made up of islands and bridges. Located on fourteen different islands spanned by more than 30 bridges, the historical name for Stockholm was Staden mellan broama which means the city between the bridges. The city is situated along the coastline of Sweden near Lake Malaren.

The Stockholm Stock Exchange is also located in Stockholm. Other employers in Stockholm with office space or other facilities include Ericsson, IBM, Electrolux, Skandia, Trygg-Hansa, and Folksam.

Entertainment And Dining Out

There is a lot to see and do in Stockholm including visiting museums, and a live and action filled nightlife and bar scene. If you are interested in the hot spots of Stockholm’s night life be prepared to go early as the trendy spots only let in people who are on their guest lists after a certain time of the evening. One club of note is Bergmans located at Ingmar Bergmans Gata 2. This exclusive nightspot can be difficult to get into. Be sure to dress for the evening and reserve a table. The Hallwylska Museet is an interesting museum full of unique items. Located on Norrmalm, the museum contains the collection of Countess Wilhelmina von Hallwyl. In this museum you will find antiques, decorative art, weapons, musical instruments, and even fine buttons. Definitely worth a visit is the Moderna Museet or the Museum of Modern Art. Here you will find work by such artists as Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Salvador Dali, and Matisse. For eating out you have many options in Stockholm. The Bla Porten (Blue Door) located on the island of Djurgarden offers a quaint, laidback setting and buffet type service. The food includes entrees such as feta and spinach quiche, oven baked herring, and desserts such as lemon tart and other pastries. The Cattelin Restaurant serves traditional Swedish food in a busy setting. The restaurant has been open since 1897 and is a place you can count on for great food at a reasonable price.

Transport Information

To reach Stockholm by air there are four major airports that serve the area: Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Stockholm Bromma Airport, Stockholm Skavasta Airport, and Stockholm Vasteras Airport. Stockholm Arlanda Airport is the largest airport in Stockholm serving more than 18 million passengers annually. It is approximately 40 km (25 miles) north of Stockholm. The International airport of Stockholm Bromma is closest to the city of Stockholm. There is a rail service that runs from Arlanda Airport to downtown Stockholm and bus lines called Flygbussarna that serve all the airports and Stockholm. To get around Stockholm itself, the inner city boat line called Djurgardsfarjan is a fun way to travel. In addition there is a Stockholm metro service, an urban rail system, tramway, and three light rail lines. A number of major roadways provide access to the city. The E4 is the country’s main road artery and runs from Helsingborg, through Jönköping and Norrköping, to Stockholm and then all the way north to Luleå.
