Adelaide is the capital city in South Australia. The metropolitan area is the fifth largest city in Australia. Situated north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, on the Adelaide Plains between the Gulf of St Vincent and the Mount Lofty Ranges, the city stretches from the coast to the foothills. This city offers wide sweeping streets, several city squares, and lush green space with the streets set in a grid and ring pattern allowing easy access. The city of Adelaide is surrounded by State Heritage Listed parklands. The city layout and public transportation system help make Adelaide Australia’s most sustainable and ‘green’ city. It offers world-class convention facilities which make this city a centre for business in Australia.
Adelaide is economically dependant on health care and the government sector. Retail trade, manufacturing, defence technology, high tech electronic systems and research, commodity exports and corresponding service industries, are also important to Adelaide’s economy. The General Motors Holden (car brand) plant manufactures almost half of all cars produced in Australia. Other companies headquartered in the area include Santos - Australia’s largest oil company, Coopers - South Australian brewery, Harris Scarfe - major national retailer, and Argo Investments Limited – major Australian investment company. There are many serviced offices to let within Adelaide’s boundaries.
Entertainment And Dining Out
Adelaide offers outdoor activities that centre on white sand beaches and the picturesque Adelaide Hills. Adelaide is home to an active boutique wine community that includes the Barossa Valley and Coonawarra reds, and the Clare Valley Rieslings. One dining option is the Good Live, an organic pizzeria offering toppings such as free-range roast duck, Spencer Gulf ‘monster’ prawns and spicy salami.
The closest major airport is Adelaide Airport. This airport is 11 km (6 miles) from the city centre. Adelaide is centrally located on the Australian mainland and this location has allowed it to create a planned transportation hub for routes heading east-west and north-south of the city. It offers a metropolitan wide public transport system, the Adelaide Metro, consisting of an extensive bus system including the O-Bahn Busway, metropolitan railways, and the Adelaide-Glenelg Tram, a metropolitan tram running through the city centre to the inner north-west suburb of Hindmarsh. Road transport in Adelaide offers a well-defined city layout and wide multiple lane roads which allow commuters to travel between the suburbs to the city within thirty minutes.
