Purchase, is a hamlet of the town of Harrison, and home to the town’s major business district. Harrison is a city in Westchester County, situated in the state of New York. It is located twenty-two miles northeast of Manhattan. Harrison and Purchase are bordered by White Plains, Rye town, Rye city, and Mamaroneck. Purchase is home to the State University of New York at Purchase, Manhattanville College, and the Westchester County Airport. According to local legend, John Harrison was given 24 hours to ride his horse as far as possible in 1695. The distance he covered on his horse would become his own land. The area was thereafter named Harrison’s Purchase. However, in March 1788, the New York State Government renamed it the Town of Harrison. A railroad first passed through this area in 1848 and the first station was built in 1870.
