Manhattan's historic Lower East Side refers approximately to the area stretching south of Houston Street to the East River and from the Manhattan Bridge to 14th Street. It is one of New York oldest neighbourhoods, renowned for the many tenements buildings that served as the first homes of working class immigrants arriving from all over the world in the 19th and early 20th century. It is especially known for its strong Jewish culture and bargain stores.

The Jewish influence is still strongly represented in landmarks such as the Beth Hamedrash Hagadol Synagogue and the famous Katz Deli.

The arrival of the 21st century brought with it a tremendous gentrification of the neighbourhood. Bargain stores share the area with stylish boutiques. Trendy restaurants such as the Clinton Street Baking Company, Cube 63 Falai and others make this a destination for discerning dinners.

Since the 1980's, the Lower East Side, once the haunt of many of New York's homeless, has seen a proliferation in the growth of chic art galleries and bars offering alternative band entertainment. Instead of a place to avoid, the Lower East Side has become a place to be seen. Access via transportation is easy with No. 6 subway to Broadway and Lafayette or the M9, M15, M103 and the M21 buses.

As the Lower East Side became a desirable venue to experience culture, it became a sought-after area to live and work. The area's old five-to-six story walk-ups saw renovation and conversion to condominiums and offices. These century-old buildings now stand side-by-side next to modern high-rises. Compared to some of New York's neighbourhoods, the Lower East Side offers reasonably affordable living accommodations as well as executive suites.
