Irving is located between Dallas and Fort Worth Texas in the northern section of the D/FW metroplex. It contains Las Colinas, one of the first mixed-use planned communities that include corporate offices, production studios, retail centers, luxury hotels and residences. The North Central Texas Council of Governments estimates the population in 2006 was 201,927 with the majority of the residents under the age of forty-five. The Irving area covers sixty seven square miles which includes a portion of the DFW International airport.
Irving's central location makes for quick access to the metroplex region via a system of highways and regional transit. There are two major highways that go east and west, SH183 and Interstate I-635, and to travel north or south to downtown Dallas you can take the SH114 or the President George Bush Turnpike. The Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) currently services the area with buses, but new rail lines are being built to connect Irving to the rest of the light rail network which will eventually extend all the way to D/FW Airport. The Las Colinas area also has a Personal Transit System for office workers to access the Bell Tower/Mandalay Canal Station on weekdays for lunch travel. The D/FW airport is only minutes away.
Starting 1971, Irving had been the home of the Dallas Cowboy games at Texas Stadium, but it has recently been demolished and a mixed-use project is slated be erected. There are many fine restaurants and upscale shops, especially in Las Colinas, and the 40 acre Irving Convention Center containing exhibition halls, convention facilities, ballrooms and dining venues is scheduled to be open late in 2010. The HP Byron Nelson Championship PGA tournament is held each year at the Four Seasons Resort in Las Colinas.
Many major corporation have headquarters in Irving, including Verizon, Citigroup, Nokia, ExxonMobile, Zales and Abbott Laboratories. Large office complexes offer prime locations with a variety of rates, ranging low-budget bullpens that average $50 per month to classy executive suites that run from $2,000 -$3,000 monthly, depending on the amenities you require. Irving has been designed to incorporate lakes, parks and modern sculptures like the famous life-sized bronze statue of the Mustangs at Las Colinas.
