Hawaii is a group of eight main islands in the Pacific Ocean that form a state in the United States. The entire volcanic Hawaiian Island chain is comprised of hundreds of islands spread over 1,500 miles. At the southeastern end of this chain are the eight main islands. The main islands are Ni?ihau, Kaua?i, O?ahu, Moloka?i, L?na?i, Kaho?olawe, Maui, and the island of Hawaii. The island of Hawaii is usually referred to as ‘The Big Island’ to avoid confusion with the state as a whole. It is the largest of all the islands. The capital of Hawaii is Honolulu, which is situated on the island of Oahu. Hawaii has a vibrant native culture mixed with North American and Asian influences and offers over 750 miles (1,210 km) of stunning coastline, which makes it a very popular tourist destination. This diverse country boasts many of the world’s best beaches and is full of modern cities, small villages, vast rain forests, large canyons, volcanoes, five star resorts and world-class surfing. There are also large American military bases scattered throughout the islands.
Hawaii is economically dependent on tourism and the U.S. military. Agriculture is still viable, especially pineapples, coffee, macadamia nuts, sugarcane, and other fruits and vegetables. There are some very large cattle ranches on the Big Island and on some of the other islands. Hawaiian and English are the official languages of Hawaii. Companies headquartered in Hawaii include Aloha Airlines, Bank of Hawaii, Hawaiian Electric Industries, and Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corp. There are many options for office space throughout the islands.
Entertainment And Dining Out
There are so many things to see and do throughout the Hawaiian Islands. From people watching and surfing at Waikiki Beach, shopping high-end shops in Honolulu, to camping in Kauai, or visiting the many historical sites throughout the islands, you can spend months in Hawaii and never see it all. One of the best things to do is rent a car, buy a guide book that lists ‘secret’ beaches, waterfalls, and favorite local restaurants by mile post and just drive around which ever island you are staying on. The perfect experience to sample local cuisine is at a Luau. Here you can try poi - a sticky paste made from taro root, Kalua pig – steamed inside a pit in the ground, or Lomi salmon – a raw, salted salmon mixed with tomatoes, onions, and peppers.
There are airports on most of the larger islands. The main international airport is in Honolulu; from there travelers can catch frequent flights to the neighboring islands. Direct service from the mainland US is also available to Kahului on Maui, Kona and Hilo on the Big Island, and Lihue on Kauai. Many cruise ships call on ports throughout the Hawaiian Islands. To get around the islands you will need a car as public transportation is limited. To travel from island to island you will need to fly. There is also motorcycle and scooter rental on many of the islands.
