The Gold Coast is a historic district in Chicago that is considered part of Chicago’s Near North Side community. The Gold Coast shares its borders with North Avenue, Lake Shore Drive, Oak Street, and Clark Street. One of the first homes in the area was the Palmer Mansion, a forty-two room castle-like structure that set the tone for the second most-affluent neighborhood in the US, behind Manhattan.
The Gold Coast economy is predicated on expensive mansions and high-rise condominiums, exclusive hotels, skyscraper office buildings, theaters, the service industry, and tourism. One of the skyscrapers is the John Hancock Building. This iconic structure stands 100 stories tall. The building contains office space, condominiums and restaurants. On the 95th floor you’ll find the Signature Room, an upscale restaurant that affords views of the city as well as Lake Michigan. There is also an observation deck on the 94th floor. The world-famous Magnificent Mile begins in the Gold Coast and runs south down Michigan Avenue. There are big name department stores and upscale boutiques that include Prada, Barneys New York, and Kate Spade.
