One of the major avenues in New York City, the Avenue of the Americas carries north bound traffic from Lower Manhattan. It was extended in 1926 to ease the flow of traffic in the Holland Tunnel and allowed construction of the 8th Avenue subway line that links with Church Street. The Avenue of the Americas runs through part of Greenwich Village, Houston, and Canal Street thus and ending on the southern end of Central Park.
Originally called Sixth Avenue, the name Avenue of the Americas was officially adopted in 1945. The ensuing confusion prompted the City of New York to use both names on street signs during the 1980's. Above Central Park, Avenue of the Americas becomes Lenox Avenue and further north into Harlem is renamed Malcolm X Boulevard. Nevertheless the Avenue of the Americas houses expensive public art and a number of landmark skyscrapers that shape the skyline. The northernmost point of the Avenue of the Americas ends at the southern entry to Central Park. This area is dotted with bronze monuments of Jose de San Martin, Simon Bolivar, and Jose Marti. A building boom in the 1960's and improvements in the 1970 have created the familiar corporate canyons along Avenue of the Americas in midtown Manhattan. Among the fixtures along this alley lie Macy?s Department Store, the CBS Building, Herald Square, Bryant Park, Rockefeller Center, and Radio City Music Hall among others.
With a 13.3% vacancy rate across Manhattan, the market for executive suites and office space on Avenue of the Americas is opening a number of alternative leasing arrangements that are more cost effective for some businesses.
