Area Information

Kips Bay is located in the borough of Manhattan and is composed of the area south of 38th Street to the East River, between Second Avenue and East 34th Street. This historic area of New York City is home to renovated neighborhoods and high-rise apartment complexes, as well as many businesses such as those in the Kips Bay Plaza. Additionally, there is a pier housing both the Waterside Plaza and the United Nations International School. First Avenue in the district has many institutional buildings and office spaces.

Business Information

Kips Bay Towers, two large apartment buildings in the neighborhood, provide over 1,000 residential units for the area. The ‘Kips Bay’ prefix is part of a trend used by local businesses as many companies attach it to their official name, such as the Kips Bay Cleaners, the Kips Bay Cinemas and the Kips Bay branch of the New York Public Library. The area of the district between Second Avenue and 30th Street holds a commercial strip mall bearing the name of Kips Bay Plaza with businesses such as AMC/Loews, Rite Aid and Crunch Fitness leasing office space. In the 1970s the district built a pier in its section of the East River by submerging over 2,000 concrete piles and erecting a platform on top of them. This pier served as a foundation for the Waterside Plaza and United Nations International School. The construction received numerous awards and was heralded as a modern achievement in urban design. Kips Bay’s border with First Avenue is populated by the buildings of New York University including the NYU College of Dentistry, NYU School of Medicine and Manhattan VA Hospital.

Entertainment And Dining Out

Kips Bay has a wonderfully unique assortment of cuisine options such as Bistro Lamazou, a French bistro with North African accents, or one of the many Indian, Turkish, and Middle Eastern restaurants. For an excellent experience of Southern Apulia-style Italian, many patrons enjoy I Trulli’s homemade orechiette and lamb chops in herb sauce with fava bean puree and dandelions.

Transport Information

Kips Bay provides subway access by means of the 28th Street, 33rd Street and 23rd Street stations. The district is also within walking distance of Grand Central Station. It is located eight miles southwest of LaGuardia International Airport, which provides regional and international flights to Canada and the Caribbean isles. The area is 17 miles northwest of John F. Kennedy International Airport, which provides regional and international flights to Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Caribbean isles.
