Manhattan in New York City is home to many colorful neighborhoods. Though not officially defined, you'll find Clinton roughly located between 34th and 59th Streets and from 8th Avenue to the Hudson River. Clinton, which was formerly known as Hell's Kitchen, has a rich history full of violence, gangs, and illegal activities. The prohibition era offered even more opportunities for those operating outside of the law and organized crime took hold of the gangs, and the community.
The movie West Side Story, filmed from 65th Street and 69th Street between Amsterdam and West End Avenue, glorified the gang wars which erupted in the 1950s between the mainly segregated gangs of Irish, Italians, and the newly arriving Puerto Ricans. The violence between these rival gangs made Hell's Kitchen an area to be avoided! This was the consensus until the early 1980s when many members of the notorious "Westies" gang were convicted. The Westies were an instrumental organization in the violence that was Hell's Kitchen. The downfall of their power made way for the major improvements in what is now known as Clinton.
The renovation of neighborhoods brought renewal to the Clinton area. So much of the charm has been maintained while the buildings were updated and renovated forming wonderful upscale neighborhoods. The now diverse community has opened its arms to embrace all with its new warmth and beauty.
