A north-south running thoroughfare, 3rd Avenue is located on the East Side of the New York City borough of Manhattan. It starts at Cooper Square and runs north for over 120 blocks. Third Avenue passes through The Bronx across the Harlem River, continues over the Third Avenue Bridge north of East 129th Street, and carries on to East Fordham Road at Fordham Center. Third Avenue converges with three other streets in the Bronx to form The Hub, a site that offers great architectural diversity. With only northbound (uptown) motor vehicle traffic allowed north of 24th Street, 3rd Avenue is a two-way street going south of 24th. However, crossing the Third Avenue Bridge, the traffic is only allowed one way. This switch renders the avenue essentially non-continuous to motor vehicles between the boroughs. In the Bronx, street signs for this avenue read ‘Third Ave,’ while in Manhattan they are ‘3 Ave’.
The Ballet Academy East, Marymount Manhattan College, The School of Visual Arts, and several public and charter schools are on or near 3rd Avenue. This area also boasts several shopping malls including Bloomingdale’s, a Lowes hardware store, grocery stores such as the Natural Green Market, and plenty of office space.
Entertainment And Dining Out
Where 3rd Avenue connects with East 149th Street, Willis, and Melrose in the Bronx, it’s known as The Hub. This area is the retail, theater, and restaurant heart of the South Bronx in New York. Along 3rd Avenue there are many coffee shops and espresso bars, including the Sunburst Espresso bar. Dining options include the Turkish Kitchen, Tavern on Third, and the Candle Café.
Public transportation from 3rd Avenue includes taxi and bus routes. At Third Avenue and 149th Street is an IRT White Plains Road Line station for the New York City Subway. This Bronx station is served by the 2 and 5 trains, the latter of which does not stop here late at night. Third Avenue is located 10 miles west of LaGuardia International Airport, which provides connections to Canada and the Caribbean isles. This area is also within 16 miles of John F. Kennedy International Airport, which provides access to both regional and international flights.
