Area Information
The Theater District is located in Midtown Manhattan. This area is sometimes referred to as Midtown West. The Theater District is where most Broadway theaters are located, as well as many other theaters, movie theaters, restaurants, hotels and other places of entertainment. Extending from 40th Street to 54th Street, and from west of 6th Avenue to east of 8th Avenue, the Theater District includes Times Square. The section of Broadway which runs through this district was nicknamed “The Great White Way”. Theater Row, an area on 42nd Street from 9th Avenue to 11th Avenue, which contains many Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway theaters, may be considered to be an extension of the Theater District, although it is not within the official boundaries.
Business Information
Some of the more famous theaters in the district are the Winter Garden, the Helen Hayes Theater, the Music Box, the Minskoff, the Palace, and the Majestic. Dotted between the theatres you will find stores, restaurants, galleries, and business office space.
Entertainment And Dining Out
With 36 different theaters on the Great White Way, there is something for everyone in the New York City Theater District. Before or after the show, there are over a hundred restaurants to choose from. Times Square is mostly filled with chain and theme restaurants such as Chevy’s, Olive Garden, TGI Friday’s and Applebee’s. Restaurant Row is the nickname given to West 46th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues. The numerous options for dining on this block include all types of American and International cuisine. A small sampling includes: Barbetta, Bangkok House, Becco and Broadway Joe - that’s just a few of the Bs! After a few days of theater and food, you will be glad that Central Park is also located in the Theater District, because this means that you won’t need to leave the area to exercise!
Transport Information
Various subway lines stop at the Theater District. Some of these subway lines include the 1, 2, 3, A, C, E, F, V, B, D, N, R, Q and W. The Theater District is located 10 miles from LaGuardia International Airport and 16 miles from John F. Kennedy International Airport. Both are within an hour of the city by taxi.
