Area Information

Running through mostly residential neighborhoods, 1st Avenue in New York carries one-way traffic northbound, or uptown. Starting in the south, 1st Avenue runs through the East Village, a trendy area populated mainly by young professionals. It then passes through several urban development projects that are located along what used to be a working industrial waterfront. Between 42nd and 47th, the avenue runs past United Nations Headquarters and is called United Nations Plaza. In this area 1st Avenue has four lanes running underground through the First Avenue tunnel. From here, the road crosses under the Queensboro Bridge and passes through the Upper East Side. Once it reaches 96th Street, 1st Avenue runs through Spanish Harlem. At 127th street, 1st Avenue crosses the Harlem River over the Willis Avenue Bridge, on the other side it terminates, becoming Willis Avenue in the Bronx.

Business Information

Between 42nd Street and 45th Street, 1st Avenue borders the United Nations Building. The New York Veterans Affairs Medical Center, the Bellevue Hospital Center, and NYU Medical Center occupy the blocks surrounding 1st Avenue; consequently there are a lot of buildings in this area that offer medical and professional office space.

Entertainment And Dining Out

There is a protected bike lane running along the left side of 1st Avenue from 14th to 23rd Street. There are many bike stores close to this neighborhood that rent bikes and gear and will provide bike trail maps. While much of 1st Avenue is residential, there are small pockets of restaurants, bars, and shops. Many will have a more local flavor than in the areas that are dedicated to leisure and tourism. There are many diverse restaurants in the area, with both local and international establishments available. A few options include Rosa Mexicano for Mexican, Chopstick or Charlie Mom for Chinese, and the First Avenue Pub for American. A popular seafood restaurant is Luke’s Lobster, while The Meatball Shop offers sandwich and pasta dishes.

Transport Information

At the intersection of 1st Avenue and East 14th Street, in the East Village, you will find First Avenue station on the BMT Canarsie Line of the New York City Subway. This line is served by the L train at all times. First Avenue is 10 miles from LaGuardia International Airport, and 16 miles from John F. Kennedy International Airport. Both airports provide regional and international services.
