Soho is affectionately called the 'heart and soul' of Manhattan. It is a shortened version of one of its streets named Houston. In 1973 it was officially dubbed historical with an area from Houston Street, north Canal Street, West Broadway and Crosby Street. Soho is famous for the hip artists who performed in the area during the 60s, including Twyla Tharp, Meredith Monk, Frank Stella and many other famous jazz musicians. Soho is also familiar to many people all over the world through the many famous movie scenes that were shot in the area. Many actors as well call Soho their home favoring the uniqueness of the area. On any given day one might see an actor or actress strolling down one of Soho's cobbled streets. Interestingly, the residents of Soho leave actors alone to go about their business as they desire.
During the 18th century, Soho was a major shopping haven for the folks of Manhattan, and it was during this time that it became know for it's astounding cast iron commercial and residential structures. Well into the 19th century cast iron, because of it's fire resistance and durability, became the material of choice for the store fronts of Soho, with the E.V. Haughwout Building at Broadway and Broome Streets in Soho the classic example.
Transportation to and from Soho is accessible through major subway lines travelling to all parts of Manhattan. There are also several buses that travel through the area carrying passengers to all five boroughs. Soho streets are close by major roadways, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Battery Park Tunnel.
The area is full of shops, galleries and a lot of heavily desired real estate. Executive suites include one of Mr. Donald Trump's newest buildings. Intermix also is a business center familiar to Soho as is the Andre Zarre Gallery, which houses contemporary furniture. Office buildings generally sell for $1 million and over.

The area caters to high end clients, and has some of the most valuable executive office rentals on the market. The price per office workstation runs approximately $600 per month. Most office buildings have doormen and accessibility 24 hours a day. Less expensive office space can be found in the neighbour on streets like Wooster, where rents generally average approximately $500 per month, but can run upwards to $4,000 monthly, depending on the style of office space desired.
A thriving, chic area in New York City, Soho is a haven for prestigious companies with landmark buildings mixed with contemporary, state-of-the art new developments. In this area, anyone wishing to lease space will enjoy hedge funds, law firms, and media companies as their neighbours. Rentals usually include meeting rooms break areas, reception services, Internet Access, phone lines, free local calling, fully furnished office suites and janitorial services.
