Broadway is the famed avenue that is perhaps the most well-known and frequented street in Manhattan, as well as one of the most historic. Dating back to the first Dutch settlement of New York, Broadway is the heart of tourism and much of New York City's business district, running the length of the island from north to south, from Bowling Green Park to the Inwood neighborhood of the Bronx.
Transportation options to, from, and along Broadway are extensive. Besides driving, one may opt to take subway lines, such as the IRT Lexington Avenue Line, the BMT Broadway Line, the IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line, and the IND Eighth Avenue Line. Buses are abundant and taxis abound.
When driving from the southernmost tip of Broadway through to the northernmost, one sees a wide variance in the style of architecture from different eras. White stone buildings of the Financial District near Bowling Green lead to the flash and sizzle of the Theater District and the giant skyscrapers of Midtown, including the Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, MetLife Building and Bank of America Tower. In the Bronx, buildings simplify into structures averaging five to eight floors, versus dozens of stories tall.
