Whitechapel is a district within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and the east of the UK’s capital city. The area has traditionally been an industrial and residential district lying immediately east of the City of London, north of Wapping and south of Bethnal Green and Hackney. Whitechapel is in part known for its association with the infamous Jack the Ripper, who was never identified but murdered numerous people in the area during the 1880s. The centre of Whitechapel is bisected by Whitechapel High Street, which was once the starting point for the Roman road connecting London and Colchester, and is now part of the A11 road that runs in and out of Aldgate. Whitechapel today is surrounded by a number of very fashionable and rejuvenated parts of east London, including Shoreditch, Wapping and Spitalfields.
