About Covent Garden Tube Station

The first record of Covent Garden is as the centre of a busy Saxon trading port in the 7th Century called Lundenwic. In the 1500s, Henry VIII seized Covent Garden and a number of the areas around Westminster, and gifted the region to the Earls of Bedford, who commissioned the houses and square which make up Covent Garden, as it is known today. In the 1970s, the buildings were protected to prevent redevelopment, and the market buildings and square remain today – home to various stylish and upmarket stores, theatres, music venues and the Royal Opera House.
