Oldham is a town and metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester. The town gained immense importance in the 19th century as an international centre for the manufacture of textiles. At its peak, it had the distinction of producing more cotton than Germany and France combined. Few cotton mills remain in operation today but the area is recognised for the stunning architecture of its mills and structures related to the cotton industry. The Oldham Museum is a popular tourist destination, attracting thousands of visitors who come to see the permanent displays related to textiles, as well as changing exhibitions that showcase the history of the area. The Saddleworth Museum and Art Gallery is another notable attraction in Oldham.
Town Square and The Spindles are two of the main shopping centres in the area. Notable retail brands such as Debenhams, Next, Boots, Thornton’s, WH Smith, River Island and Argos are located here. Most of the office space in the vicinity is occupied by service sector businesses. The First Group, DCT Civil Engineering and North Lancs Training Group all have offices in Oldham.

The Oldham Coliseum theatre has an annual pantomime and hosts world class productions throughout the year. People from all over Manchester come to watch performances at this venue. Alternately, you can also spend a great evening at one of the excellent pubs in the area such as The Roebuck Inn and The Black Lad. Great dining experiences are easy to find in Oldham. The Little Tree is well known for its traditional British fare, while Casa Belmondo Ristorante is one of the best places for delectable Italian cuisine.
National Express runs multiple coach services that provide access to numerous destinations across the country these are; the 325 service to Manchester and Birmingham, the 380 to Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester and Chester, the 540 to London and the 385 to North Wales. Local buses are the best way to get around town, with the Metrolink Tram service already under development and scheduled to begin operations by 2013. Manchester Airport is the closest airport providing Oldham with convenient domestic and international flights.
