Oldham is a town and metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester. The town gained immense importance in the 19th century as an international centre for the manufacture of textiles. At its peak, it had the distinction of producing more cotton than Germany and France combined. Few cotton mills remain in operation today but the area is recognised for the stunning architecture of its mills and structures related to the cotton industry.
