Area Information

Hertford is a county town located in Hertfordshire, in the South of England. It is believed that the name of the town is of Anglo Saxon origin, in which ‘ford’ denotes a shallow place close to a small river or stream; often well frequented by stags, deer or harts. Being situated at the confluence point of four river valleys makes the entire area extremely beautiful and picturesque. Hertford Museum is a famous attraction in the area, offering a fascinating look into the history of the town. Other notable places of interest include the Bayfordbury Observatory and Bushey Museum and Art Gallery.

Business Information

Hertford is famous for its numerous retail shops that sell collectables and antiques. Other retail spaces that have a local presence include salons, boutiques, chemists, laundries and shops selling novelty gifts. Larger chain stores such as Tesco and Sainsbury are also located in the vicinity. The McMullens Brewery continues to remain a major employer in the area, one of very few such establishments still left in the region. Office space is primarily occupied by businesses such as real estate agents and computer professionals.

Entertainment And Dining Out

The skate park at Hartham Common is a well-frequented venue in the area. Fishing, Kayaking and Canoeing facilities are also available here, making it a fun place for family days out. For night-time entertainment, you can visit the many pubs in the vicinity such as The College Arms and The Grandison. Hertford offers the chance to sample the delectable cuisine that its restaurants has on offer. The Whistling Duck is a great place for British food, try Old Siam for Thai fare, and Raj Tandoori for authentic Indian curries.

Transport Information

The area is well served by two main railway stations – Hertford East and Hertford North. While the former provides access to services from Liverpool Street station in London, the latter provides connectivity to Moorgate and Kings Cross stations. Four international airports are situated close by, well connected by numerous bus routes, these are Luton, Heathrow, Stansted, and Gatwick. Local buses provide a convenient way to get around within town.
