About Hackney

Hackney is a London borough in the north east of the UK’s capital city. The area is located immediately north east of the City of London, to the west of Islington and north of Tower Hamlets. Hackney is close to the heart of London’s commercial and cultural centre and it has played an important role in the redevelopment and rejuvenation of east London in recent years. The eastern edge of the Borough of Hackney is marked by the River Lea, which historically marked the boundaries of the counties of Essex and Middlesex. Despite lying within a central and inner city area of London, Hackney boasts numerous large and well-kept parks, including London Fields, Haggerston Park and Hackney Downs. Among the most vibrant and popular parts of the borough is Hoxton, which has earned a reputation as one of London’s leading nightlife hotspots.

Things to do in Hackney

There are dozens of great bars and pubs across Hackney, with Hoxton standing out as one of the best places to spend an evening anywhere in east London. Among the most recommendable of Hackney pubs are the Macbeth, the Stag’s Head of Hoxton and the Scolt Head on Englefield Road. Meanwhile, excellent places to eat out in the area include Duke’s Brew & Que, which serves barbecue food and craft beers, the Towpath, a popular canal-side café, and an Argentinian restaurant called Buen Ayre. Other attractions in Hackney include Broadway Market, which is among the best markets for street food that you’ll find anywhere in London, and the unusual but brilliant Hackney City Farm, which welcomes visitors throughout the year at the south-east corner of Haggerston Park.
