An innovative feature of the building is its green roof, the first in the city. The Sedum roof provides energy saving insulation, prevents heat loss, is cool in summer, reduces pollution, helps prevent flooding by retaining water and provides a sustainable natural environment for wildlife and insects.
The centre is based just a 5 minutes walk from Sheffield Train Station, enabling easy access to the rest of the city centre, High Street and designer shops, Showroom Cinema, Crucible and Lyceum Theatres, Millennium Galleries, City Hall and Town Hall, the Central Library and Art Gallery.
The centre Scheme has been developed as a demonstration project by the Cultural Industries Quarter Agency (CIQA) in partnership with Derwent Living Housing Association. The Scheme is funded by the Yorkshire Regional Housing Board in association with Sheffield City Council, and is managed by the Showroom Workstation.
