Situated on the River Dee, Chester is a stunningly beautiful city located in Greater Manchester in the county of Cheshire. The earliest settlements in the area originated more than 2000 years ago, with a number of ancient fortresses and towers visible even today. The Roman ruins in the vicinity attract thousands of curious sight-seers all year round. The Eastgate Clock, considered to be the second most famous clock in England after Big Ben, is a popular attraction in the area, as are the Grosvenor Museum and Chester Castle. Chester is also home to Britain’s largest zoo – Chester Zoo – where you can see more than 8000 animals.
The main businesses in Chester relate to various industries including tourism, financial services, public administration and wholesale and retail trade. Of these, the financial industry is one of the major employers in the area, with numerous serviced offices being occupied by banks and other financial companies including the headquarters of the Alexander Beard Group. The Chester Philharmonic Orchestra performs a number of concerts every year. If you are in the area when one of the concerts is scheduled, it is an excellent entertainment option that should not be missed. Alexander’s Jazz Bar and The Warehouse offer live music shows that showcase local talent. The Italian restaurant Piccolino serves a huge array of mouth-watering dishes and is famous for its antipasto starters. Siam is equally loved for its Thai food and also serves some dishes in the Japanese Teppan-Yaki style.
Chester General railway station is the main station that serves the area. Numerous scheduled departures provide access to hundreds of locations in Greater Manchester as well as to destinations in Wales and London. Chester Airport is the closest airport for domestic services, whereas Liverpool John Lennon Airport is the closest for international routes.
