Bishopsgate is a ward within the City of London and a major road route running from Shoreditch in the north to Gracechurch Street in the south. The ward and the road take their name from one of the eight gates that were once found within the London Wall, a structure first built by Roman occupiers to defend the city around two millennia ago. In fact, because the London Wall cut directly through the area, Bishopsgate was, for much of its history, divided into two distinct sections, referred to as Bishopsgate Within and Bishopsgate Without. Today, the ward of Bishopsgate lies in the heart of the City of London, with impressive skyscrapers along the road route including the Heron Tower, 99 Bishopsgate, Tower 42 and Broadgate Tower.
