It was developed as an upscale residential district in the 1920s with a landscaping design centered on what are now known as Belgrave Square and Eaton Square. The architectural scheme of Belgravia is dominated by white stucco houses arranged in impressive terraces. Today, Belgravia, particularly the area immediately in and around Belgrave Square, is the home to a number of embassies and diplomatic residences. Belgravia itself is a relatively quiet district. However, it offers easy and rapid access to other areas of London. Its luxury hotels, quaint bed-and-breakfasts, and proximity to Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park make it an ideal spot for the tourist who wants to enjoy a relaxing stay in London. Known as something of a magnet for the rich and famous, Belgravia also offers the opportunity for a celebrity sighting of two. Notable residents include Margaret Thatcher, Elle Macpherson, and Nigella Lawson.
