Area Information

Established in 1694 and with a history that spans well over three centuries, the Bank of England is the UK’s central bank and the second oldest bank in the world. The Bank of England plays a vital part in the UK’s financial markets and economy, and following monthly Monetary Policy Committee meetings makes crucial decisions relating to matters such as base interest rate movements in the UK. Legend has it that the gardens of the central bank are haunted by the ghost of Sarah Whitehead, or as she is better known, the Black Nun. This has led to the Bank of England sometimes being referred to as ĎThe Old Lady’.

Business Information

London’s Financial District, where the Bank of England has been based for over 275 years, is a thriving business area. As the name suggests, this area is dominated by financial corporations and until 2004 the London Stock Exchange was also situated on Threadneedle Street. Offices to rent in this part of the city are often snapped up by businesses looking to benefit from the excellent location within the Financial District. In addition to banks and financial institutions, a number of other businesses can be found here, including a range of shops and restaurants.

Entertainment And Dining Out

Barbican Hall, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and the Comedy Cafe are just a few of the great venues in the area. You can enjoy all sorts of entertainment here, from live comedy and music performances to the cinema, or a night of partying. The dining options available cater for all tastes and needs, from lunching bankers to hungry tourists. You can sample the cuisine at one of a number of Ďcelebrity-chef restaurants’ or choose from a great variety of international dishes at the numerous restaurants on your doorstep. If you prefer hearty pub grub to fine dining, there are many pubs serving traditional British food. For those looking for a quick bite to eat on the go, a variety of higher end fast food eateries can be found within easy reach.

The Bank of England is located in the heart of London’s Financial District, where transport links are excellent. A number of tube services are within easy walking distance, including Bank, Moorgate and Liverpool Street. There are also several mainline stations within reach, including London Bridge and Moorgate.
