About Houndsditch

The name Houndsditch was first recorded in 1275 and seems to literally refer to a ditch in which dead dogs were thrown. This theory has been backed up by a number of canine skeletons found in the area in the 1980s, which appear to date back to Roman times. The ditch was filled in in the 16th century, after which Houndsditch became a shopping location, selling second-hand clothing. In the 20th century, the area was home to the Houndsditch Warehouse, a landmark department store, which further cemented the area as a retail district. This building was closed in 1986 and replaced by one of the many office buildings which now dominate the area. One of the most famous landmarks in the area is the Gherkin, which is a centre for business and also home to a number of restaurants and entertainment options. Houndsditch today is a thriving financial and retail area, which continues to grow as the years go by.

Setting up your business here

Houndsditch makes up a large part of the Cityís financial district, and is dominated by financial institutions, banks and investment companies. There is a thriving market and retail community, and several newspapers are also based here. The area is home to the head office and print works of the UKís largest newspaper company, a part of NewsCorp. With excellent local transport links and a high concentration of financial businesses in one location, Houndsditch is an ideal location for businesses across a range of industries.

Things to do in Houndsditch

Houndsditch may be a popular business location, but it also offers a great range of activities for both day and night. During the day, a popular historical landmark is All Hallows by the Tower, which is the oldest church in the City of London and has a great range of Saxon and Roman artefacts to discover, as well as a 1300s crypt museum. Keeping the historical vibe in mind, an atmospheric evening activity is Wiltonís Music Hall, once a truly magnificent venue filled with chandeliers and luxurious furnishings, the ruined venue is still host to various music and drama productions, and is steeped in history. For something a little more up to date, ClueQuest is a live action escape game to play in teams, with puzzles and tasks to solve, and which would make the perfect group bonding activity. Houndsditch isnít short of restaurants and bars, with Turkish food being prevalent. One of the best Turkish restaurants in the area is Fora, which serves the freshest food at a reasonable price. Dukes is a popular venue for both drinking and dining, with an upmarket cocktail bar and 500 capacity club, as well as a pizzeria on site. The Alice is very popular with the after-work crowd, and has a buzzing atmosphere and a good drinks selection.
