Area Guide Clerkenwell

Located in the Borough of Islington, Clerkenwell is best known for St Johnís Gate and Smithfield Market and has multiple transport links. Clerkenwell is an ancient parish, regaling in both its proximity to the City of London and its fashionable status. Financial industries have inevitably worked their way from Bank up towards Farringdon but it is also home to many artistic startups and digital firms.

After the Industrial Revolution, Clerkenwell became a centre for breweries, printers and watch makers and the large open-plan contemporary office spaces available in Clerkenwell today are conducive to similar ventures; publishers and industries that require space to create.

Setting up your business here

Home to some of Londonís oldest and quirkiest establishments, such as the catacombs beneath the old House of Detention, Clerkenwell is a fast-paced and vibrant cog in the cityís makeup. Visitors are often drawn to the district for its range of restaurants and as a growing residential area with exceptional transport links-for this reason, renting office space here seems logical.

Culture and Entertainment

The buzz in Clerkenwell is palpable both by day and night. Bubbling with historical and literary references from Shakespeare to William Blake, it is Charles Dickens who famously walked the winding streets for inspiration. Once banking in the Finsbury Savings Bank, he gives Oliver a lesson in pickpocketing in Clerkenwell Green, which is an eclectic mixture of housing, offices and pubs. Clerkenwell is also now home to the international centre for literature, literacy and free speech.

As well as being a strong contender in London for boutique shopping, the district is also famous for Smithfield Market, notoriously the largest meat market in the UK. Reviving a touch of Clerkenwellís monastic past, St Johnís Gate now houses the Museum of the Order of St John.

Eating out

Known for its wide range of eateries, professionals can expect vast choice in Clerkenwell throughout the working day and into the evening. For English cuisine, St John is located around the corner from Smithfield Market. It is decorated with a contemporary interior and serves a large array of traditional dishes.

Providing upmarket dining with a twist, Restaurant Dans Le Noir combines high quality food with the unique experience of eating in the pitch black. The Little Bay restaurant is famous for its ďpay what you think itís worthĒ campaign and serves modern European cuisine alongside eccentric decor. For something special, Michelin-starred Club Gascon is set inside a marble and wood interior with cuisine from the south west of France.
