Area Guide Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf is a major business district on the Isle of Dogs in East London, housing the headquarters of world-renowned banks, media organisations and professional services firms.

Once a bustling storage area for imported rum and sugar, Canary Wharf is now home to some of the worldís top financial institutions and is one of the best places in East London to rent an office. Its sculpted fountains, towering architecture and suited inhabitants have sometimes branded the place as soulless, but over the years gardens have been shaped with winding walkways and frequent cultural events have given it a vibrant edge.

With spectacular views across The City and the thriving Olympic Park, Canary Wharf has slowly grown its entertainment empire; young families are building lives there and it is quickly drawing in those working in technology and the creative industries.

Setting up your business here

It is not just banks and large organisations that take up residence in Canary Wharf. Creative and technology companies are attracted to the buzzing atmosphere and finding a meeting space alongside cafes and bars is easy, with 14m sq ft of office and retail space in the vicinity. Future plans have ensured that homes, offices and schools will occupy the space, to further colonise the Royal Docks and make full use of its unique waterside appeal.

Culture and Entertainment

Home to some of Londonís most exciting events and exhibitions, Canary Wharf holds over 100 art events a year and is a popular place for photography and filming workshops. The Christmas ice rink draws in crowds from all over town and cupcake decorating, ice sculpting and face painting are some of the many activities propelling professionals into the festive season.

Canada Square Park is surrounded by trees and flowerbeds and Cabot Square houses the famous circular fountain. Twisting walkways and modern art are dotted across the district and regular live music and food events are a far cry from its characterless reputation of old.

Eating out

Catering to the appetites of professionals at lunch, evening diners and family gatherings, Canary Wharf boasts over 100 eateries. For dinner with panoramic views, the Plateau Restaurant Bar and Grill is a popular choice, with contemporary interior, two private dining rooms and two outdoor terraces. Huge glass windows cast light across the dining area, where French cuisine is served.

A great atmosphere for team building, The Parlour, which looks over the park from the west, boasts open air table tennis and an al fresco bar.

For some Mediterranean flair head to Camino, a buzzing Spanish tapas bar. For a quick bite, Sticksínísushi in Crossrail Place, serves fresh food based on a unique combination of traditional sushi and yakitori sticks from the grill.
