Population and Landmark…

Leeds is located on the River Aire in West Yorkshire, England. It is the urban core and administrative centre of the wider City of Leeds metropolitan district. The city is an important historic city and is crammed full of spectacular landmarks and monuments. Leeds originated as a small Saxon village in the 11th century, with a population of around 200 people. It grew with time both in size and stature, especially after Queen Victoria granted Leeds city status at the end of the 19th century. Nowadays, the city has a population of around 730,000, making it the 3rd biggest city in England in terms of population.

Economy…

Leeds is home to tens of thousands of businesses, particularly in the services sector with a high concentration of financial companies such as banks, accountants and insurance firms, and a wealth of consultancies. Leeds is nowadays recognized as the fastest growing city in the UK and has a diverse economy with these sectors now dominating over the city's manufacturing industries. Leeds is the fastest financial centre in England outside the capital. The Tertiary industries such as Call Centres, Offices and Media have contributed to the high rate growth of Leeds economy. Leeds is today recognized as the key hub for the New Media businesses as the city has been used as headquarter for few of the biggest UK internet leading companies such as Freeserve, Energy or Ananova. Nowadays, over 33% of the UK’s internet traffic has been recognized as going through Leeds.

Office Rental Levels…

Leeds was recently voted as Britain’s Best City for Business by Omis Research. It has also been announced as the fastest growing city in the UK. The Office space demand during 2007 was high and while requirements across central Leeds were up in 2007, absorption levels fell within the City core. Big firms are still looking for Grade A office space in Leeds, despite the belt-tightening caused by the credit crunch, according to the Office Market Report 2007 from Colliers CRE. Central Leeds office take-up in 2007 was more than 600,000 sq ft, a 13% increase on 2006, of which 48% was classed as grade A. According to Colliers CRE, demand has remained healthy across central Leeds. The report shows that the availability of office space has fallen by 4.2% over the past year to stand at 0.9 million sq ft.

Transport…

Leeds City Station is one of the biggest in the country with regular trains to a huge range of destinations all over the UK and it is located in the heart of the city just off City Square. Leeds also has a large modern bus station served by National Express and local bus services, and a zero-fare bus service, known as the FreeCityBus, now runs on a circular route through the centre of the city. The total distance from Leeds to London is 171 miles. A typical flight between Leeds and London would have a flying time of about twenty minutes. To drive from Leeds to London would approximately take three hours and six minutes.

The Tourism, Attractiveness of the city…

It’s impossible to talk about Leeds without mentioning the city’s fantastic shopping opportunities. The main commercial centre is located across a pretty, pedestrian grid of streets where many of the main high street chains can be found. Leeds offers tourists a varied package of facilities and entertainment. Leeds is now standing out next to its neighbour, Manchester, and is one of the contenders for the coveted crown of “Capital of North”. The city also offers major national and regional attractions including the Royal Armouries, Henry Moore Institute, Harewood House and West Yorkshire Playhouse, which stages more productions than any other theatre outside of London.
