Noida is situated towards the north of India close to Delhi. It is bound on the west and south-west by the river Yamuna, on the north and north-west by Delhi, on the north-east by Delhi and Ghaziabad and on the north-east, east and south-east by the river Hindon. Noida falls under the catchment area of the Yamuna River and is based on the old river bed. It is an area under the management of the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority. The city came into existence on 17 April 1976 and celebrates 17 April as “Noida Day”. Sanjay Gandhi set it up as part of an urbanisation thrust during the controversial Emergency period.
Lately, Noida has become a hub for multinational firms outsourcing IT services. Many large software and BPQ companies have their offices in the city. Many other companies have their Indian branch offices in Noida, because of the Special Economic Zone, the suburban atmosphere in Noida and its proximity to Delhi. There is more to Noida than just industries. Film city, situated in Sector 16A is the hub of all the major news channels and famous studios. Noida’s proximity to Delhi, which is the political hub of the country, makes it an attractive destination for news channels. Commercial activities have also risen in the past couple of years due to a sudden spurt in malls and multiplexes. The IT Industry is the backbone of Noida’s economy. There is a possibility that many IT units will be set up in Noida provided the relevant infrastructure is available. Noida has the potential to become one of the leading centers of the IT industry on the lines of Bangalore and Hyderabad. The commercial property market in Noida is seeing a slide inprice, bucking the trend in the National Capital Region. However, this suburb near Delhi, has recorded a high vacancy level of 26.2% in 2007 and then 15% in the first quarter of 2008. The rentals of information technology and special economic zone office spaces in Noida witnessed a correction in April-June with rental values declining 13%. The quarter witnessed a total supply of 4.3 million sq. ft in the National Capital Region, of which 60% was IT specific. The supply was spread across micro-markets with majority of it in Noida, with 54%.
Noida Metro work is in full swing for the route that extends the Delhi Metro line coming to New Ashok Nagar till the soon upcoming Noida City Center at Sector 32. Noida will be connected to the Connaught Palace Station, via the Barakhambha Road, IP Estate and Akshardham Complex link. The schedule completion date for first phase is June 2009, just before the Commonwealth Games 2010 at New Delhi. In 2006, the Noida Authority took up the job of widening and re-metalling of roads, which has led to some reduction of jams on the choked roads of the city.
The city currently boasts of a stadium, which is being upgraded to international standards for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, some of which are likely to take place in Noida. Noida Fim City, the most prestigious part of Gautam Budh Nagar has seen selected as the venue for the 5th biggest film festival of India from 2007 onwards, Global Festival Of Films On Peace and Spirituality.
