Purporting the antiquity of the name, Gurgaon city was first called Gurugram, i.e. the village of the Guru. Gurgaon is the sixth largest city in the Indian state of Haryana. The city has a population of 318,820. Gurgaon has grown extensively during the last decade due to its proximity to Delhi and its emergence as a major outsourcing destination and as a real estate market in northern India. An important town in ancient Hindu mythology, Gurgaon is one of Delhi’s four major satellite cities and is therefore considered to be part of the National Capital Region of India.
The city is home to a number of important enterprises of varying proportions. The industrial juggernauts like Maruti and Hero Honda have established their manufacturing hubs in the district. The result is that the region now boasts of some of highest numbers of cars and two wheelers produced in the world. There are also other enterprises that deal in the surge in demand for chemicals glass and building materials. Favorable tax policy by the Haryana government, improvement in the city’s infrastructure by Haryana Urban Development Authority and the need of a business center close to Indira Gandhi International Airport saw the emergence of Gurgaon as one of the most prominent outsourcing and offshoring hubs in South Asia. Real Estate, automobiles, retail and banking are the other major industries. Gurgaon contributes over 50% of Haryana’s income tax revenues along with Faridabad.
Office rentals in Gurgaon have declined by up to 8% in the second quarter of 2008 owing to increase in supply and softening of demand for office space, a latest report by global realty consultant CBRE said. With significant addition projected in supply of office space in Gurgaon, CBRE said the rentals are expected to remain under pressure over the next few quarters. The report noted that MG Road, Golf Course Road and DLF Cyber City area in Gurgaon are preferred locations for office space leasing because of factors such as proximity to National Highway-8, accessibility to the Airport and being enroute to the proposed Delhi metro.
The state government of Delhi and Haryana have created an 8 lane expressway from Delhi to Gurgaon, which meets European standards. It is part of the Golden Quadrilateral project. The expressway between Gurgaon and New Delhi, provides non-stop connectivity to the Indira Gandhi International Airport and the Domestic Airport and to Dhaula Kuan in Delhi over a distance of 18 miles, and includes 7 flyovers and 5 underpasses along the stretch.
Gurgaon city being the premier commercial hub in the state of Haryana with a sizable chunk of the outsourcing industry is naturally the destination for a large number of visitors related to the big business organizations. In addition to these, the city also attracts guests thanks to sites like the Damdama Lake, Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary and the Surajkund arts and crafts festival.
