The gateway to the south, the populous industrial capital of Tamil Nadu is where the history of British settlement in India has ancient roots. This has resulted in some splendidly monumental municipal buildings and a number of broad avenues and gardens. But Chennai’s history stretches way beyond the British presence, with its resourceful citizens actively engaging in trade with the Chinese, Romans, Greeks and others more than 2,000 years ago. Still retaining much of its traditional charm, this bustling city, formerly called Madras, provides a captivating insight into southern heritage. Chennai is proud of its Tamil culture and in many ways is still traditionally conservative, lacking the cosmopolitan flavours of Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi. The residents of Chennai are called Chennaiite. Chennai city has a population of 4.5 million, while the total metropolitan population is 7.04 million.
The growth of Chennai into one of the major cities in India is attributed to its exceptional geographical location at the seaboard of the palar delta. Chennai has a diversified economic base anchored by the automobile, software services, hardware manufacturing, healthcare and financial services industries. The city is base to around 30% of India’s automobile industry and 35% of its auto components industry. A large number of automotive companies including Hyundai, Ford, BMW or Mitsubishi have manufacturing plants in and around Chennai. The city is also an electronics manufacturing hub where multinational corporations like Dell or Nokia have set up electronics and hardware manufacturing plants, mainly in the Sriperumbudur Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Other sector such as commercial banks and many state level co-operative banks and insurance companies have their headquarters in Chennai.
Chennai after Bangalore is fast emerging as the largest office market in the country and one of the most sought after IT and BPO destinations in the world. Very few office real estate markets in the world have undergone such a dramatic and rapid change in such a short span of time as the Chennai office market in the last 4 years. Chennai is witnessing a sustained real estate demand that has largely been a result of growth spearheaded by a spurt in the knowledge sector largely comprising of the IT segments. The first quarter of the year 2008 started at a brisk pace with absorption of over 1 million sq. ft in the Chennai office space market. Developers and land owners are realising that projects in Chennai are not just competing with each other but also with projects from other competing cities such as Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune.
Chennai airport is located 10.5 miles southwest of the centre. It is serviced by a collection of international airlines, while its domestic terminal links it to every major Indian city via a number of domestic carriers. Chennai has two main railway stations: Central Station is the arrival and departure point for major destinations in the country including trains to Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Delhi. Approximately 0.6 miles east is Egmore Station, dealing mainly with routes in the southern regions of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, including Madurai and Trichy.
Chennai is hailed to be the liveliest city in entire South India. The city has its own unique charm, which sets it aside from the rest of the big cities. The vibrancy of rich culture and traditions exuded by the city and its residents is simply moving. It is one such city in Tamil Nadu, which has been blessed with an extreme treasure of tourist attractions.
