Berners Street is situated in the City of Westminster, within the Theatreland area (W1T), between Oxford Street and Mortimer Street. Constructed in 1746, Berners Street was made famous in 1810, by comic writer, Theodore Hook, who created an elaborate joke, now known as the Berners Street Hoax. Mr Hook made a bet with his friend that he could make any building the most talked about address in London, so to do this, Mr Hook made a large quantity of orders such as coal, fish and beer to 54 Berners Street, which made the road hugely congested, and highly talked about – thus winning his bet. Today, Berners Street is well known for its luxury 5-star Sanderson Hotel and Plaza Shopping Centre.
Surrounded by three major tube stations, Berners Street is located a short walk away from Goodge Street (Northern Line), Oxford Circus (Central, Victoria and Bakerloo Lines), and Tottenham Court Road (Central Line). Convenient access to Heathrow Airport is also provided via the Heathrow Express Rail Service from Paddington.
