Bangalore is the third largest city in India and the fifth largest metropolitan area of the country. Bangalore is the capital city of the state of Karnataka in South India. The city sits at the southern tip of the Deccan, an area of undulating plains in southern India, 300 miles southeast of Goa. Bangalore, often referred to as the Garden City of India and the Silicon Valley of India, is a highly commercialised district, with many companies dealing in information technology. The city is also the growing hub of biotechnological industries in India. Although Bangalore is thus modernised, the natural beauty of the gardens such as Lal Bagh and Cubbon Park balance the city’s appearance, culture and nature. The population has doubled in the past five years and is now racing towards 8 million. The modern developments have tended to overwhelm the historic elements but there are some relics, such a Tipuc’s Palace, in the old town to the south. The plus side of thing is that there is today a huge choice of restaurants, pubs, clubs and cinema in Bangalore.
Bangalore’s $100 billion economy makes it a major economic centre in India. With an economic growth of 10.3%, Bangalore is the fastest growing major metropolis in India. Additionally, Bangalore is India’s fourth largest fast moving consumer goods market. The city is the third largest hub for high net worth individuals and is home to over 10,000 dollar millionaires and about 60,000 super-rich people who have an investable surplus of $1 million and $116,000 respectively. Bangalore is called the Silicon Valley of India because of the large number of Information Technology companies located in the city which contributed 33% of India’s $33 billion IT exports in 2006-07. The growth of IT has presented the city with unique challenges. Ideological clashes sometimes occur between the city’s IT moguls, who demand an improvement in the city’s infrastructure and the state government, whose electoral base is primarily the people in rural Karnataka. Bangalore is a hub for biotechnology related industry in India and the year 2005, around 47% of the 265 biotechnology companies in India were located there; including Biocon, India’s largest biotechnology company.
With little supply in the central business district, Bangalore, India’s information technology hub, saw the highest demand for office space in the first quarter of 2008 at 5.14 million square feet. A report by property consultant Cushman & Wakefield says though the demand for office space remained upbeat at 14 million square feet across India’s cities, around 15.54 million square feet of supply has come into the market in the same quarter. In Bangalore, much of the limited supply was a result of large pre-commitments in 2007 that were delivered in the first three months of this year. The demand in Bangalore has been spurred by a number of new aero-engineering and logistics companies. The problem is, with huge demand for Grade A office space in prime areas and little supply, there is a problem of oversupply in peripheral areas like Whitefield and Marathahalli.
Bangalore is connected by air with Delhi, Goa, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune and many more. The airport is located 19 miles north of the city centre and serves domestic as well as international destinations. All national highways throughout the country are well connected with Bangalore. The city is also connected by rail with cities all over India. Near the city train station the central bus stand is located, offering connections to several destinations in India.
The city of Bangalore has numerous tourist attractions to keep its visitors busy. Right from beautiful gardens to serene lake to magnificent palaces, the city offers a wide variety to those who are planning to go on Bangalore sightseeing tours. One of them, the Seshadari Iyer Memorial is a distinctive building to be seen. It was constructed of red sand stone and is located in Cubbon Park. It houses a public library and the Bangalore High Court.
