Area Information
As the capital of Bas-Rhin department in the Alsace region of eastern France, Strasbourg is just 2.5 miles (4 km) west of the Rhine River on the Franco-German frontier. As it is right on the Franco-German border, Strasbourg’s history is based largely around being passed back and forward between the two countries for years. The result is a city and people with a distinctive local identity, which combines German efficiency and energy with the lively nature and sophistication of the French. Strasbourg has a truly independent cultural feel. With its own opera, France’s only national theatre outside Paris, and two international music festivals, it relies on its own strengths when it comes to the arts.
Business Information
Strasbourg’s economic situation relies on food processing, mechanical and electrical engineering, and the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, electronics, and plastics. There is also a large automobile assembly plant in the city’s industrial port zone. The port itself is one of the largest on the Rhine and handles shipments of petroleum, agricultural products, and building materials. Strasbourg is home to branches of the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights, the Eurocorps, and the Franco-German TV network Arte. The area offers a mix of old and new office space to serve other corporations and institutions.
