As the capital of Bas-Rhin department in the Alsace region of eastern France, Strasbourg is just 2.5 miles (4 km) west of the Rhine River on the Franco-German frontier. The French national railway operates frequent direct high-speed trains to Strasbourg from Paris Gare de l’Est and Lille Europe. The high-speed TGV-Est runs from Paris Est to Strasbourg in 2 hours 20 minutes. The best journey time from London (Eurostar to Paris and TGV-Est to Strasbourg) is typically around 5 hours.
