The oldest town in the area, Laren is situated in the province of North Holland, in the Netherlands. This is a town and municipality located in the region known as Het Gooi. This is a slightly hilly area around Hilversum characterised by its green landscape, the extravagant villas, and the historical charm. Het Gooi is known in the Netherlands as the home of the rich and famous. Laren is one of the richest towns in the Netherlands, sharing this wealth with its neighbour, Blaricum. Hilversum is home to an extensive complex of audio and television studios belonging to the national broadcast production company NOS, as well as to the studios and offices of all the Dutch public broadcasting organisations and many commercial TV production companies. Art lovers won’t want to miss the Singer Laren museum and concert hall in the centre of Laren. This facility is devoted to presenting and preserving the collection of the American artist William Henry Singer (1868–1943) and his wife Anna. The museum also houses a café, and holds many travelling art exhibits. Dining options in the area include Poffertjeskraam Cornelis de Haan, in Brink. This is an old Dutch restaurant serving authentic Dutch ‘poffertjes,’ waffles, and drinks. The restaurant caters to the cyclists and is only open in the summer months. Another option in nearby Brink is Het Bonte Paard, a bar that has been in the same place for over 400 years. Often you can see the Dutch celebrities at this famous hangout.
The closest international airport near Laren is Schiphol Airport, located 32 km (20 miles) from the town centre. There is also bus service available to the town. On the edge of Laren is a major motorway junction where the A1 and the A27 converge.
