As the main town of the Haarlemmermeer municipality, Hoofddorp is situated in the province of North Holland, in the Netherlands. Founded in 1853, the name of the town translated to English means Main (or Head) Village. The town was formed as soon as the area’s former lake Haarlemmermeer was drained, and the land was reclaimed. The town is located just 20 km (12 miles) from Amsterdam.
The town serves as a bedroom community for those who work at the airport, and for Amsterdam. Hoofddorp features a state-of-the-art training centre and Headquarters for JAA, the Joint Aviation Authorities of Europe. It is a five minute walk from the towns train station. Hoofddorp is the closest city to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. When travelling by train from Schiphol, it takes 4 minutes and is only one stop. From the town to Amsterdam’s Central Station is 25 minutes by train. The town is served by Hoofddorp railway station. There are many options for getting to Leiden Centraal railway station, Amsterdam Zuid railway station, and the Amsterdam Central station.
