Covent Garden Area Information

Once famous for it’s fruit and vegetable market within the central square, Covent Garden is now a popular shopping and tourist site due to it’s excellent retail facilities and charming entertainment.  Covent Garden is divided into two main areas – the north side, comprises of Long Acre which is home to independent and ‘high street’ retail stores centred around Seven Dials and Neal’s Yard. The south side is built around the central square, also known as the Piazza, which is famous for its entertainment and street performances along with excellent eateries, markets, theatres and museums.

Transport Information

Covent Garden Tube Station (Piccadilly Line) is located on the corner of Long Acre and James Street, just 2 minutes walk from the Piazza. However, due to Covent Garden’s placement in WC2, there are a number of tube stations close by which makes for more convenient commuting. Leicester Square (Piccadilly and Northern Lines), Holborn (Central and Piccadilly Lines) and Charing Cross (Northern and Bakerloo Lines) are all a 5 minute walk away and allow access to all areas of London.

Businesses most suited to the area of Covent Garden are those within the retail, entertainment, tourism, hospitality and food & drink sectors. However this does not rule out companies in sectors such as technology, media and publishing sectors who could fit neatly within the small, winding streets that surround the central square.

If you’re looking for a pre or post theatre dining experience, head to Christopher’s Bar and Grill (18 Wellington Street, WC2E 7DD) which offers modern American cuisine with a five star service. Lastly, why not try London’s oldest restaurant, Rules (35 Maiden Lane, WC2E 7LB), which was founded by Thomas Rule in 1798. The menu consists of British classics with a modern twist.

Entertainment and Nightlife

Entertainment is all around you on a daily basis in Covent Garden, with street performers dotted around the Piazza and music echoing around the streets. However, if you’re looking for a bar or club, there are also some great options. Punch & Judy (40 The Market, Covent Garden Piazza, WC2E 8RF) is a world famous pub with a balcony overlooking the Piazza; ideal for a summers’ night. Along with London’s oldest restaurant, Covent Garden is also home to London’s oldest wine bar, Gordon’s (47 Villiers Street, WC2N 6NE), which serves quality wines in a subterranean, secret setting. Lastly, for those of you who want to party into the early hours, Detroit Bar (35 Earlham Street, WC2H 9LA) has a retro sci-fi theme and a buzzing atmosphere.

Local Attractions

Of course there is the vibrant Piazza which offers a whole host of entertainment and shopping facilities, but if you want something more subdued, St Pauls Covent Garden (Bedford Street, WC2E 9ED), also known as ‘the actors church’ is the peaceful heart of Covent Garden, away from the hustle and bustle. Another popular attraction is the world famous Royal Opera House (Bow Street, WC2E 9DD) which plays host to classical music and theatre productions all year round.
