Fremantle is a city in the Australian state of Western Australia. It is located at the mouth of the Swan River. The Harbour in Fremantle serves as the port for Perth, the state capital. Freemantle is 20 km (12 miles) from the city centre of Perth. This city is known for its well-preserved architectural heritage. There are convict-built colonial-era buildings, an old jetty and port, and historical prisons.
Fremantle’s economy is largely based on the largest Western Australia working port. There are two harbours, the Inner Harbour is situated right in Fremantle and it handles the states container trade, livestock exports, motor vehicle imports, and general cargo. Fifteen kilometres (9 miles) south of Fremantle in the city of Kwinana is the Outer Harbour which handles bulk cargo commodities, from grain to LPG. The Roman Catholic University of Notre Dame Australia is located in Fremantle, as is the Fremantle Hospital, a major teaching hospital. One of the great things to do in the area is visit the Fremantle Markets, which have been in operation since 1897. Here you will find handicrafts, speciality foods, dining halls, and fish and vegetable markets. In the area you will also find street performers and over 150 stalls, all housed in a Victorian-era building, which is listed on the National Trust of Australia and the state’s Heritage Council. Fremantle offers some great dining and entertainment options. It has a popular cappuccino strip that is lined with café after café. There is a Fisherman’s Wharf offering fish and chips, and close to the beach there are several alternative restaurants for diners that are vegan, or are looking for preservative free, fair trade, and organic dishes. Little Creatures is a local pub, serving fish and chips and other seafood that is very popular with locals and tourists alike.
The closest airport to Fremantle is the Perth International Airport, situated 24 km (15 miles) from the city centre. Fremantle is the end point of a railway line which runs from Perth to Fremantle. Major highways serving the city include Stirling Highway, Canning Highway, and Leach Highway.
