Hiroshima is both a city and capital of the Hiroshima ken or prefecture. It is located in the south western Honshu province of Japan, on Hiroshima Bay of the Inland Sea. Hiroshima has a vibrant downtown area. The feature street is Hondori, a pedestrian arcade that is closed to traffic and lined with shops and restaurants. Hondori Street begins near the Peace Park. Aioidori (Aioi Street) runs parallel to Hondori. This is the main vehicle thoroughfare in the city. Here you will find several large department stores and restaurants. There are two UNESCO World Heritage sites in Hiroshima. These are The Atomic Dome and the Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima, which is famed for its filling with water and appearing to ‘float’ during high tide.

Hiroshima is served by three airports. The nearest major airport is Hiroshima Airport. This airport has international and domestic flights and is 56 km (34 miles) from the centre of the city. Another major airport is Iwami Airport offers domestic flights from Masuda, Japan and is 119 km (74 miles) from Hiroshima. Matsuyama Airport has international and domestic flights from Matsuyama, Japan and is 201 km (125 miles) from Hiroshima, Japan. Hiroshima Station is a five minute tram ride or twenty minute walk to the central downtown area. Local public transportation in Hiroshima is provided by a Tram system and buses. There are seven tram lines, many of which terminate at Hiroshima Station.
